The journey of Haj is a journey of love. When a person performs the rites of Haj, proceeding to Mina, Arafaat, and Muzdalifah, he sacrifices and endures many hardships in fulfilling its completion. This completion and endurance is the manifestation of love for Allah Taala. It is borne by the fact that these places can be visited at any part of the year, where the same acts can be performed with ease, but this is not what Allah Taala wants from us. Allah Taala wants us to show our love through abdiyat.

The journey of love is also a journey of sacrifice. Whatever difficulty may arise enroute, it needs to be handled in a manner befitting the abdiyat of the hajji. At this time the requirement is for the hajji to turn his gaze towards Allah Taala. The spectacular nature of this is best found in the application of sabr and the designation that “Oh Allah, I am going through this hardship and I will exercise sabr only for your pleasure as I am undertaking this journey out of love for you.”

On this journey it is also possible that many spiritual problems may occur. To keep oneself grounded, one should keep this thought in mind, “my love is far inferior to that of my companions.” One should also look for every opportunity to make ikraam of others, and not only of those we know. It is mentioned in a Hadith that one of the signs of an accepted Haj is the Hajji would have made a lot of ikraam. (Not exact wording of the Hadith).

We will also have the opportunity of going to make salaam to our beloved Nabi (salallahu alaihi wasalam) Insha Allah Taala. This is indeed a great moment in the life of the hajji and should be appreciated as such. When one is at the Raudah Mubarak, he should ask for the intercession of Nabi (salallahu alaihi wasalam).

When we are in Madinah Shareef, it is of utmost importance that we remember at all times we are the neighbours of Nabi (salallahu alaihi wasalam). Our conduct should be exemplary at all times. Although it is important to implement sunnats in our life at any times, it is more so in Madinah Shareef. That is the thing we must come back with from Madinah Shareef.
